In this blog post, we’ll explore the various classes of RVs, from the luxurious Class A motorhomes to the versatile Class B and C models, and even the increasingly popular camper vans.

Looking test the waters of RV or Vanlife? This post is for you!

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time renter, this guide will help you navigate the world of RVs, ensuring you find the perfect home-on-wheels for your next adventure. Plus, we’ve rounded up some of the best sources for renting these vehicles, making your dream journey just a booking away.

Let’s break down the classes first

Class A Motorhomes

Not something I am personally looking test out right off the bat, but a great way to see the country for sure! Maybe in the future, who knows. These are indeed the mac daddy vehicles of the RV’s. Like a real home on wheels!

  • Description: Class A motorhomes are the largest and most luxurious of the RVs. They resemble bus-like structures and offer ample living space.
  • Features: These RVs often include full-sized bathrooms, king-sized beds, fully-equipped kitchens, and sometimes even expandable sides (slide-outs) to increase living space.
  • Ideal For: Large families or groups, extended trips, or those seeking a high level of comfort and amenities.

Class B Motorhomes (Camper Vans)

Now this is a more like it for me! Room for me, the cat, and an occasional guest.

  • Description: Class B motorhomes, also known as camper vans, are the smallest type of RV. They are built on a van chassis and are more compact and easier to drive.
  • Features: They typically include basic sleeping, kitchen, and bathroom facilities and are designed for efficiency and ease of use.
  • Ideal For: Solo travelers, couples, or small families, and for those who want a balance of mobility and convenience.

Here is a great post about Class B’s and some of the new options as of 2023. Some love vans there!

Class C Motorhomes

Like in Goldilocks and the 3 bears, this one is just right … for some. By the way, have you ever been to an RV show to see these up close? I am thinking of heading over to one in Tampa this weekend myself. One of the downsides for the A and C class for me is the logistical size of them and not being quite as mobile as say a van or having a separate vehicle to pull the home and be able to detach and explore. Let’s continue though, I think there are a few of those options coming up 🙂

  • Description: Class C motorhomes are a mid-size option, larger than Class B but smaller than Class A. They are built on a truck or van chassis with an over-cab area.
  • Features: They usually include more amenities than Class B, like more sleeping space, a decent-sized kitchen, and a full bathroom, but are more manageable than Class A.
  • Ideal For: Medium-sized families or groups, or those who want more space and amenities than a Class B but find Class A too large.

Travel Trailers

The convenience of a home on wheels plus the flexibility of always having a smaller manouvarable vehicle to navigate those small scenic roads as you explore the area. This might be a great option if that is your desire!

  • Description: Travel trailers are non-motorized, towable RVs. They come in a range of sizes and are towed behind a vehicle.
  • Features: Depending on size, they can include full kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Larger models may have slide-outs.
  • Ideal For: Those who prefer to use their own vehicle for travel and like the convenience of unhitching the trailer at a destination.

Fifth Wheel Trailers

Or perhaps you need something just a bit larger?

  • Description: Similar to travel trailers, fifth wheels are towed but require a special hitch in the bed of a pickup truck. They are typically larger than travel trailers.
  • Features: They often have high ceilings, multiple slide-outs, and luxurious amenities, sometimes including multiple levels.
  • Ideal For: Those with a suitable towing vehicle looking for a spacious and comfortable camping experience.

Pop-Up Campers

Or a bit smaller?

  • Description: Pop-up campers are lightweight, collapsible trailers suitable for short trips and camping. They are easy to tow and store.
  • Features: Basic amenities include sleeping areas, a small kitchen, and sometimes a dinette. Bathrooms are rare.
  • Ideal For: Budget travelers, small families, or those new to RVing who prefer something simple and easy to handle.

Teardrop Trailers

Or ALOT smaller?

  • Description: Teardrop trailers are small, towable RVs known for their distinctive teardrop shape. They are compact and lightweight.
  • Features: Basic models include a bed and a kitchen area, usually accessible from the outside. Bathrooms are not standard.
  • Ideal For: Solo travelers or couples who need a place to sleep and basic cooking facilities, and prioritize ease of towing.

Truck Campers

Now THIS is a unique way to go. There are several YouTubers making a go at this kind of lifestyle. I would personally make sure the truck is 4 wheel drive though. Could navigate this into some pretty interesting locations I bet!

  • Description: Truck campers are units that can be loaded onto the bed of a pickup truck.
  • Features: They typically include a sleeping area, a small kitchen, and sometimes a bathroom. They are compact and offer a lot of mobility.
  • Ideal For: Those who already own a pickup truck and are looking for an affordable and versatile RVing option.

Camper Vans (Vanlife)

Personally have had my eye on this option for a while. The van life community is pretty active also over on the ole’ YouTubes. Thinking about renting one for a few of my outings next year perhaps! I share a few links to some sources below.

  • Description: Camper vans, popular in the vanlife community, are customized vans designed for living and traveling.
  • Features: Custom-built or professionally outfitted, they include sleeping space, cooking facilities, and sometimes creative storage solutions. Bathrooms vary.
  • Ideal For: Individuals or couples embracing the vanlife culture, who prioritize flexibility, simplicity, and the ability to travel stealthily.

So that pretty much wraps up the educational part of out little post here, but what to do next? If buying or leasing is not an option, or if you are looking at short trips from time to time with no place to park a vehicle of that size anyway, then of course renting sounds like it could make a bit more sense.
