Discovering Fish Creek – Ep 38

The moment a wandering travel day turns into a favorite place

Sometimes you arrive in a town and immediately know something special is going on. Not because of a famous landmark. Not because of something you planned. Just a feeling. That was my first reaction when I arrived in Fish Creek in the heart of Door County.

Within minutes I was walking around saying something I don’t say very often while traveling.

This might be the cutest town I’ve ever seen.

A Town That Immediately Pulls You In

Fish Creek has that rare quality where almost every street corner feels like it belongs in a postcard.

  • Small cottages.
  • Little inns tucked between trees.
  • Shops and restaurants with water views.
  • Paths that quietly lead down toward the shoreline.

Even the pace of the place feels relaxed. I had originally come into town just to take care of a small logistical task… booking a boat tour for the next day. But once that was done, I found myself wandering around with my camera, capturing whatever caught my eye.

And in a place like this, that turned out to be quite a lot.

Sunset Park and the View of the Bay

While walking through town I stumbled onto a small path that led toward the water. It brought me down to a place called Sunset Park, a quiet little spot overlooking the bay. The view stretched out across the water, boats drifting slowly in the distance, and the soft light of the afternoon settling over the shoreline.

It was one of those travel moments where you pause for a minute and just take it all in.

Door County has long been known as a summer destination for people from Chicago, Milwaukee, and throughout the Midwest. Standing there looking out across the water, it was easy to understand why.

The Reality of Traveling Without a Plan

The funny part about arriving in Fish Creek was that I hadn’t carefully chosen it. In fact, I ended up here mostly because of availability. When you’re traveling the way I often do… loosely planned, moving from place to place with only a rough idea of where you’ll sleep… sometimes the accommodations decide the destination for you.

The night before arriving in Door County, I discovered that most of the charming inns and waterfront cottages were already booked. Eventually I managed to find a room slightly off the main path, which at the time felt like a compromise. But walking through town later that afternoon, seeing all those beautiful little inns and cottages right along the water, I realized something. If I had planned everything perfectly… I might have ended up somewhere else entirely. Sometimes the slightly chaotic way of traveling actually leads you to the right place.

Exploring the Towns of Door County

After spending some time exploring Fish Creek, I started thinking about the other small towns scattered along the Door County peninsula. Places like Egg Harbor sit just a short drive away, and each one has its own personality.

My plan for the rest of the afternoon was simple.

  • Get back in the car.
  • Drive a little.
  • Stop when something interesting appears.

Door County is full of those little discoveries… scenic roads, waterfront parks, quiet marinas, and towns that feel like they’ve been welcoming travelers for generations. And this was just the beginning of exploring the area.

A Perfect Beginning to Door County

When I first pulled into Fish Creek, I thought it might just be a quick stop. Instead it turned into one of those places that immediately leaves an impression. The kind of town where you find yourself walking slower… noticing more… and wondering what it might be like to stay a few extra days.

Luckily, I had two nights here. Which meant there was still plenty more to explore.
