A Morning at the Gilbert Mansion – Ep 36

When a simple overnight stay becomes a story worth remembering

Some places you stay during a trip simply give you a bed for the night.

And then there are places that give you something more… a story, a conversation, a glimpse into someone else’s passion.

My stay at the Gilbert Mansion in Grand Rapids, Minnesota turned out to be one of those places.

Waking Up in a Living Piece of History

There is a certain feeling that comes with waking up in a historic home.

The floors creak a little differently. The light filters through old windows in a softer way. And everywhere you look there are little details that remind you that this building has lived many lives before you arrived.

Walking through the grand entrance of the Gilbert Mansion, it was immediately clear that this was not just another bed and breakfast. It felt more like stepping into a living piece of history.

My room, called the Helen Room, was named after the youngest child of the Gilbert family. The furnishings reflected the elegance of another era, carefully arranged to preserve the character of the home.

But what truly made the experience special was the person running it.

Meeting Christine

Christine, the owner and proprietor of the Gilbert Mansion, welcomed me with the kind of enthusiasm that you only find in people who genuinely love what they do.

She gave me a private tour of the home, walking from room to room sharing stories about the Gilbert family and about her own journey restoring and preserving the mansion.

It quickly became clear that this house was more than just a business for her. It was a long-term passion project.

She grew up in the neighborhood and remembered driving past the house as a teenager with her future husband. Back then she used to say that one day she would own that building.

Years later… she did exactly that.

And now the mansion is in a constant state of careful renovation, with improvements being added while still protecting the historical charm of the place.

Listening to her talk about the house, the renovations, and the history behind it all felt like getting a personal history lesson wrapped inside a tour.

The Breakfast That Stole the Show

Bed and breakfasts are usually known for their morning meals. But this one went far beyond expectations.

Breakfast at the Gilbert Mansion felt less like a quick meal and more like a carefully crafted experience. Much of the food was homemade or sourced locally, and some ingredients even came from their own garden. There were rice pancakes, quiche, homemade items, and maple syrup that her husband had harvested himself.

It was one of those breakfasts where you find yourself slowing down… appreciating the details… and realizing that someone put a lot of thought and care into what they were serving.

Out of all the places I stayed on this particular trip, this was easily one of the most memorable mornings.

The Stories We Almost Capture

As I left the mansion later that morning, I realized something.

I had taken photos. I had recorded a few video clips. But I had not fully captured Christine’s story on camera. And honestly… it deserved it.

Listening to her talk about the house, her childhood in the neighborhood, and the decades-long journey of restoring the property made me think that her story alone could fill an entire documentary. Maybe even more than one.

Moments like that remind me how many fascinating people you meet while traveling… people whose stories deserve to be told.

Heading Toward Minnesota’s North Shore

After leaving Grand Rapids, my next destination was Minnesota’s North Shore along Lake Superior.

It was shaping up to be a busy weekend along the coast, and finding a hotel room was proving to be more difficult than expected. But the plan was simple… keep driving, explore along the way, and hopefully land somewhere interesting.

Eventually I stopped at Shovel Point near Silver Bay, a beautiful overlook along Lake Superior. The air was cool, the water stretched endlessly toward the horizon, and for a moment the road trip slowed down again. Later that evening I managed to secure a room in the town of Two Harbors.

Another stop. Another story waiting to unfold. But the morning at the Gilbert Mansion would remain one of the highlights of this stretch of the journey.
