On this day, I set out to photograph some waterfalls, hoping the start of the week would mean fewer crowds. Little did I know that this day would offer much more than scenic shots.
The Start of the Adventure
I left the hotel, noticing a group of young hikers prepping for a day of adventure. Their energy was contagious, but it also reminded me of a recent tragedy in the Columbia River Gorge. A woman had fallen to her death during a hike near Multnomah Falls. This weighed on me, but I was glad I had someone special in my life to talk it through with. After processing those emotions, I refocused on my plans for the day—photographing beautiful waterfalls.
Capturing the Perfect Shot
As I made my way to the waterfalls, I found myself in awe of the landscape. Using my neutral density filter, I captured some stunning shots. My settings were ISO 160, f/22, and I played with exposure times—ranging from a quarter to half a second. The results? You’ll have to be the judge! There’s something magical about photographing waterfalls when the lighting and flow come together perfectly. I braced myself for another hike, moving up towards a bridge to get a new perspective.
A Visit to the Hatchery
Before my waterfall journey, I took a detour to a local fish hatchery. This place was home to sturgeons, and one in particular stood out—Herman, the 10-foot-long sturgeon. Something about the name sturgeon always made me chuckle. Seeing Herman in person, though, was impressive. It’s not every day you encounter a giant fish with its own name.
Commander Salamander: A Character Idea
As I traveled, a random thought popped into my head. I once had this idea for a show called Commander Salamander. I didn’t really have much beyond the name, but it always stuck with me. Maybe one day I’ll develop the character, but for now, it’s just one of those creative seeds waiting to grow.
Exploring the Seattle Area
After a day of photography, I found myself exploring the Seattle area. I’ve always loved Puget Sound, and I even reminisced about a time I worked a golf tournament in Bellevue. Driving around the marina, I met Joshua, a local who lives there part-time because his mother is a flight attendant. It was one of those spontaneous conversations that make travel special—just getting to know people in their everyday lives. Looking around, I couldn’t help but imagine what it might be like to live near the water.
Wrapping Up the Day
As the day wound down, I enjoyed some fish and chips at Anthony’s by the water. It was the perfect end to a day full of photography, reflection, and exploration. Now it’s time to return the rental car, repack my bags, and prepare for the next adventure—Alaska! I can’t believe I’m finally going, and I’m excited to share that journey with you all soon.
Thanks for coming along for the ride today. More to come as I continue exploring, photographing, and sharing these moments with you.
In Episode #13 of my 50 at 60 journey, I begin the day photographing stunning waterfalls along the tranquil Columbia River Gorge on a quiet Monday morning. As I revel in the natural beauty, I continue to reflect on the tragic story of a hiker who fell off a cliff yesterday, a poignant reminder of life’s delicate balance. The adventure continues with a scenic drive to the SeaTac airport area, where I conclude the day with a breathtaking sunset and a delightful dinner at Des Moines Marina. Join me for a day of serene landscapes, heartfelt reflections, and picturesque moments.
